I found this site by following a link on someone’s signature on the HAMB.

A little bit about me: I live in Caro (I married a Caro girl), and work in Bay City. I just moved to the area from Muskegon, but my grandparents lived in Saginaw, and my grandmother was from Flint, so I have been coming here my entire life. I also went to CMU, which isn’t too far away.

My hot rod is a green ‘68 Camaro and my daily driver is a blue ‘61 Falcon. Neither gets driven all that much, because I usually carpool with my father-in-law/boss.

I know a few car guys in this area, but I’m always interested to meet more. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only person I know who gives a hoot about old cars (though my wife is remarkably supportive of my addiction).

Anyhow, nice to meet you all, I look forward to watching this site grow in 2010.

Re: Car Shows

Well, I try. I love going to look, and it's nice to have a car there to use as a home base. I only got to two shows and two cruise nights this year. I was at Cars and Crafts, and the Pumpkin Festival show, both right around the corner from my house in Caro, but didn't get to any others, but it was our first summer here, so if things are less crazy next year, and I hear about some in advance, I'd like to attend more. I've been to Frankenmuth in the past. What are some good ones around here?

Your wife must go right past my house. I live a block west of M81.

Thanks. Is that your Vette in your avatar? Reminds me of my Dad's '69. It's his old hot rod from the early 1970s. No scoop on his, but it's maroon with a cowl hood and side pipes.

So why did my member number change from 49 to 51? Have I been demoted?

Sadly, it’s not quite as sharp as it used to be. That picture is from about 1971. It’s still a really neat car, though. The full history of the ‘Vette is kind of interesting.

It was a 300hp/4-speed car originally, Cortez Silver with a Gunmetal Gray interior. The first owner was some kind of engineer for GM. He sold it to Dad around 1971. Dad bought an LT-1 (solid-lifter, 371 hp motor, as used in the ZR-1s of the era) from Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids. Actually, he bought a long-block, and heads, because they didn’t have a complete engine in stock. He had that balanced and blueprinted and installed it along with an Edelbrock “Tarantula” intake, a Holley carburetor, a set of Hooker headers and sidepipes, and the cowl hood (which he sealed to the carburetor through a homebrewed combination of aircleaner pieces and foam rubber). It has a Hurst shifter on the close-ratio Muncie, but I’m not sure if Dad added that, or the first owner. Dad also applied the black lacquer (along with some LeMans-inspired metallic blue graphics, not seen above).

Well, after a few years (and a number of very successful street races, I’m told), a fellow came along that just had to have the car, and Dad sold it. That guy was some kind of contractor, and ran into financial problems soon afterward. The car sat (with the T-tops off!) next to his garage for a number of years. The carpet was ruined, and the heater ducts still occasionally produce acorns.

Sometime between 1975 (when my parents met) and 1978 (when the married), Dad had the opportunity to buy the car back, but he had only enough money to buy the car or an engagement ring. Well, he has the car today, so you can guess that Mom never got her diamond. She still maintains that the car is “her engagement ring.”

The black lacquer shown in the picture remains Dad’s favorite paint scheme, but like most lacquer jobs, it didn’t hold up to being stored outside. Dad repainted the car in a MoPar maroon color, using urethane. The car is still maroon:

It needs a paint job, but it still runs quite well. It hasn’t been on the road since 1994, though. Dad is helping my brother with his ‘77 instead of working on his own car. I hope some summer to persuade Dad to haul the Corvette out, give it a wash, and try her out again. I have very fond memories of Dad scaring the crap out of me in her on my way back from little league games. It goes!
