'65. My grandparents bought it new to Dad's specs: tripower, 4-speed, 4.11 limited slip. At the time, Dad was driving this:

My first ride in a real muscle car was a 1965 GTO hardtop. 389 tri power, four speed, rear end posi, gears? It would spin those g70 wide ovals as far as you wanted. You sure don't see very many 65's anymore.

It was a very cool GTO. Kind of a sad story as to the car’s ultimate fate: My dad ended up owning the car when my grandparents bought a new Charger in 1968. He had been driving it a lot anyway. He had done a lot of hot rodding with it - Crane Fireball camshaft, single Holley four-barrel for ease of tuning, etc. Dad joined the Air Force in 1968, and was in for four years. When he got out in 1972, he decided he wanted a new car and sold the GTO to a local kid (he bought a Mach 1 Mustang).

The kid had it only a matter of weeks and rolled it in a street race. The GTO sat, engineless, in an Alpena junkyard until the 1980s at least. It’s gone now, which is probably for the best, as I would want to drag it home no matter the condition.

I like to think the 389 is still out there in a Deuce highboy or something. Knowing Alpena, though, it probably ended its life in a pulling tractor.

The Plymouth is indeed a ‘64 Sport Fury. It had a 426 Max Wedge engine that my dad bought off a Super Stock racer, I believe in Louisiana, and a four-speed. Not in this picture, but the car also eventually sported acid-dipped front sheetmetal.

Here’s today’s picture:

1973 (last year for Javelins was '74, AMXs went along with them until they reemerged on the Hornet platform in '77). My mom's second Javelin (not an AMX). This one has the Pierre Cardin trim and interior, the Go-Pack, a hot 360, and another TF.

Yep, mine before we changed the color and top, back when it was a 2bbl/PG car.

Very cool. My mom sold her original shortly after she married my dad, and started driving his Mustang. Her father had purchased it for her new at an AMC dealer in Saginaw, so she started to regret it. She always said that if she found another purple Javelin, she'd buy it. Dad agreed, thinking such a liklihood remote. Then the Pierre Cardin Javelin showed up in the Auto & RV, and you know the rest of the story...
